US Passport Info.

There is a wealth of US passport info. available to U.S. citizens, but sorting through it can take time you could be using to do other things like preparing for your trip. Here you will find the passport information you need to know before you travel, so you can be prepared.

Where to Apply

There are three ways to apply for a passport: by mail; at a passport acceptance facility; or at a passport agency.

You can apply by mail if you already have a passport, and:

  • You can submit your undamaged passport with your application
  • Your current passport was issued when you were 16 or older
  • Your current passport is less than 15 years old
  • Your current name matches the name on your passport. If your name is different than the name on your passport, you must be able to legally document your name change. For additional U.S. passport info. about changing your name on your passport, see the Bureau of Consular Affairs website.
  • You must apply in person at a passport acceptance facility if:

  • You are applying for your first passport
  • You are under 16 or your current passport was issued before you turned 16
  • Your most recent passport was lost, stolen or damaged
  • Your most recent passport was issued more than 15 years ago
  • Your name is different than the name on your passport and you can’t legally document your name change.
  • You are eligible to apply at a passport agency if you are traveling within two weeks or need a visa within four weeks.
  • Required Documentation

In addition to your passport application form, there is a variety of other US passport info. you must provide so your application can be processed. If you are eligible to apply by mail, you must submit Form DS-82 along with your current passport, a passport photo and the applicable passport fees. If your name has changed since your last passport was issued you will also be required to provide documentation of your name change.

If you are required to apply in person, you must submit form DS-11 and proof of U.S. citizenship; a current, valid form of identification; a photocopy of the front and back of your identification documents; the applicable fees; and a passport photo.

    Passport Fees

One of the most important pieces of US passport info. you need to know is how much it will cost to get a passport. The fees associated with obtaining a passport vary based on the type of passport you request. Adult passport cards cost $30-$55, and adult passport books cost $110-$135. If you purchase both the cost ranges from $140-$165. The exact cost of an adult passport depends on whether or not you are renewing an existing passport or applying for a new one. Minor passport cards cost $40, while minor passport books cost $105. If you purchase both together, the cost is $120.

    Passport Validity

In general, if you were 16 or older when your passport was issued, it is good for 10 years. If you were younger than 16 when your passport was issued, it is good for five years. However, there are exceptions. It is important to remember this US passport info. if you were issued an emergency passport replacement while traveling abroad or you were granted permission to obtain a second passport. In these cases your passport will be valid for less than the standard 10-year period.

    Passport Processing Time

The average time it takes to process a passport is four to six weeks. For a $60 fee, the government will expedite your application and you can receive your passport in half that time. However, these processing times are estimates. It can take much longer to receive your passport, especially when application volume is high. If you are traveling in less than two weeks and need your passport quickly, you can apply at a passport agency, where you will usually receive your passport the same day you apply.

    Expedited Passports

If you need your passport quickly but can’t get to a passport agency or don’t want to deal with the bureaucratic red tape that comes with the application process, you can authorize a professional passport expediting service like “easy service” to apply on your behalf. Simply provide your US passport info. to the expediter, and they will hand deliver your application to the U.S. passport agency, so you don’t have to. After your passport has been issued, they will pick it up from the passport agency and overnight it to you. When you work with an expediting service, you can be sure you will receive your passport before you are scheduled to travel.
