Ghana Visa

All U.S. citizens are required to secure a Ghana visa for entry into the country. Ghana issues the following types of visas:

  • Diplomatic
  • Official
  • Business
  • Tourist
  • Student
  • Other
  • It is important that you secure the appropriate type of travel visa based on the purpose of your trip prior to arriving in Ghana. Without it, you will not be allowed to enter the country.

Requirements vary based on the type of visa for which you are applying. Below is a list of the most common items required when applying for a visa. However, you may be required to provide additional documentation.

  • Two copies of your completed visa application form
  • U.S. passport with at least six months validity remaining
  • Two passport photos taken within the last three months
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your trip to Ghana or a letter of invitation from your host
  • If you are applying for a tourist Ghana visa, you must include a copy of your round trip ticket to Ghana
  • If you are applying for a business, official or student visa, you must include a letter of invitation
  • If you are a journalist or part of a film crew, you must submit a form explaining what you will be covering and the equipment you will be bringing with you
  • Consular officials have the right to request additional information from any applicant prior to issuing a visa. Submitting an application does not guarantee issuance of a visa. Officials can deny visa applications for a variety of reason. For the most current Ghana visa requirements, visit the website of the Ghana Embassy.

    Submitting Your Application

After you have filled out your application forms and gathered the required documentation to obtain your visa, you can submit your application materials in person at the Ghana Embassy or Consulate or by mail.

It is recommended that you submit your application two weeks to one month before your scheduled departure date. If you send your application by mail, you must include a certified FedEx prepaid, self-addressed return envelope so your passport can be returned to you when your visa is issued.

In general, it takes 14 business days to process a journalist or film crew visa and seven to days to process other types of visas. For an additional fee, expedited requests will be processed within 72 hours.

The fee for a single entry Ghana visa is $60.00 when using routine processing or $100.00 for expedited service. The fee for a multiple entry visa is $100.00 for routine service and $200.00 for expedited processing. All visa fees are payable by money order, cashier’s check or certified bank check and are non-refundable.

When you have completed your application, simply send it to the visa service and they will take care of the rest. They will carefully review it to make sure you have included all of the required information. Then they will submit it for processing to the Ghana Embassy or Consulate on your behalf. After your visa is issued, it will be mailed directly to you, so you can be on your way.
