Afghanistan Visa: What is Required to Enter the Country

All U.S. citizens traveling to Afghanistan are required to have an Afghanistan visa for entry into the country. If you arrive without a travel visa, your passport could be confiscated, you may be fined, and you are subject to deportation. The Afghanistan Embassy and Consulates General do not usually issue multiple entry visas.

Visas are typically single entry with a validity of one, three or six months. When you arrive in Afghanistan, you may be asked to register your visit. When you register your visit, you will be issued a card that you must keep with you throughout your trip. You will be required to give the card to Afghan officials when you leave the country.

Below is a list of the most common Afghanistan visa requirements. In some cases, you may be required to provide additional documentation depending upon the purpose of your trip.

  • A completed application form. It is very important that you fill out the application form in its entirety and provide all of the required supporting documentation. Incomplete applications will be returned to you unprocessed, delaying the issuance of your visa and possibly your travel plans.
  • U.S. passport with at least six months validity remaining
  • Passport photo
  • A letter from your employer or sponsor including the purpose and duration of your trip, sponsorship information and evidence of sufficient funds for your stay in Afghanistan.

Submitting Your Application

When your application is complete, you have two options for submitting it. You can submit it in person at the Afghanistan Embassy or Consulate, or you can mail it in. If you send your application by mail, you must include a prepaid self-addressed USPS or FedEx return envelope. You should allow three business days for your application to be processed (not including mailing time if you submit your application by mail).

The fee for a single entry visa valid for one month is $100.00. The fee for a single entry visa valid for three months is $140.00. The fee for a single entry visa valid for six months is $180.00. All Afghanistan visa fees must be paid by money order or cashier’s check. Cash, credit cards, debit cards and personal checks will not be accepted.
