North Korea Foreign Entry Requirements

If you are planning a trip to North Korea, it is important that you familiarize yourself with the North Korea foreign entry requirements before you arrive.

Without the proper documentation, you may not be allowed to enter the country, and you could be arrested, fined and/or imprisoned for long periods of time. According to the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs website, it’s not routine for Americans to travel to North Korea.

However, if you do travel there, you must have a valid passport and visa. Additional information about these requirements is included below. However, entry requirements are subject to change.

For the most up to date information, visit the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs website, or contact the Embassy of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in Beijing.

Passport

According to the North Korea foreign entry requirements, all U.S. citizens must have a valid passport to enter the country. If you do not have a passport or your current passport is damaged or will expire before your trip, you must obtain a new one before arriving in North Korea.

Visa

U.S. citizens traveling to North Korea are required to have a visa to enter the country. However, there is no North Korean Embassy in the United States.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs website, the only place U.S. citizens can secure a North Korean visa is the North Korean Embassy in Beijing, China. But, the Embassy must receive authorization from the DPRK Foreign Ministry in Pyongyang before a visa will be issued.
