Iceland Foreign Entry Requirements

Are you planning a trip to Iceland? If so, it is important that you familiarize yourself with the Iceland foreign entry requirements before you arrive.

If you do not have the proper documentation, you may not be allowed to enter the country. All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport, evidence of sufficient funds and a return ticket.

Depending on the purpose and length of your trip, you may also need a visa and/or a residence permit. Additional information about these requirements is included below. However, entry requirements are subject to change.

For the most up to date information, contact the Icelandic Embassy or visit the website of the Embassy of Iceland.

Passport

All U.S. citizens are required to have a passport valid for at least three months beyond their scheduled stay to satisfy the Iceland foreign entry requirements. If you do not have a passport or your current passport is damaged or does not have the requisite amount of validity remaining, you must obtain a new one before leaving the United States.

Because Iceland is part of the Schengen agreement, after entering the country, U.S. citizens can travel freely among all Schengen countries for up to 90 days without having to show their travel documents again. However, you should keep your passport with you because officials have the right to conduct passport checks.

Evidence of Sufficient Funds

Upon arriving in Iceland, you may be asked to show evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover the cost of the entire length of your stay.

Return Ticket

According to the Iceland foreign entry requirements, all U.S. citizens traveling to Iceland should have a return ticket to the United States when they arrive.

Visa/Residence Permit

U.S. citizens visiting Iceland for up to 90 days do not need a visa if they are traveling for tourism or business. However, if you are going to Iceland for a reason other than business or tourism, or you plan to stay for longer than 90 days, you may need a visa and/or residence permit.

For additional information about these requirements, visit the website of the Embassy of Iceland or the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration website.
