Guatemala Foreign Entry Requirements
If you are planning a trip to Guatemala, it is important that you familiarize yourself with the Guatemala foreign entry requirements before you arrive. Without the proper documentation, you may not be allowed to enter the country.
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport to enter Guatemala and re-enter the United States. It is important you do not remain in Guatemala beyond your authorized stay. If you do, you will be fined for each day you overstay your authorized visit.
Additional information about this requirement is included below. However, entry requirements are subject to change. For the most up to date information, contact the Guatemalan Embassy or visit the website of the Embassy of Guatemala.
According to the Guatemala foreign entry requirements, all U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport to enter the country. If you do not have a passport or your current passport has been damaged or will expire before your trip, you must obtain a new one before you leave the United States.
The U.S. Department of State recommends carrying a copy of your passport with you at all times while you are in Guatemala. Because of the high rate of passport theft, they recommend leaving your original passport somewhere safe.
When to Apply
Because you must have a valid U.S. passport to satisfy the Guatemala foreign entry requirements, the U.S. Department of State recommends applying for your passport well in advance of your trip, so you do not experience unnecessary delays.
When you apply for a passport, you must choose routine or expedited processing. It takes approximately four to six weeks to process applications using routine service and two to three weeks to process applications using expedited service.
However, these times are only estimates. It may take longer to receive your passport if you apply when application volume is high.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs website, U.S. citizens don’t need visas for stays of up to 90 days. You can extend your stay for an additional 90 days by requesting an extension from Guatemalan immigration.
