Greece Foreign Entry Requirements

If you are planning a trip to Greece, it is important that you familiarize yourself with the Greece foreign entry requirements before you arrive.

If you do not have the appropriate documentation, you may not be allowed to enter the country. U.S. citizens are required to have proof of sufficient funds for their stay, a return ticket and a valid passport.

You may also need a visa depending on the purpose and length of your stay. Additional information about these requirements is included below. However, entry requirements are subject to change. For the most up to date information, contact the Greece Embassy or visit the website of the Embassy of Greece.

Evidence of Sufficient Funds

U.S. citizens entering Greece may be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds for the entire length of their stay in Greece.

Return Ticket

According to the Greece foreign entry requirements, upon arrival in Greece, you may be asked to present a return ticket to the United States to show that you do not have plans to remain in the country beyond your authorized stay.

All U.S. citizens traveling to Greece must have a passport valid for at least three months beyond their scheduled stay. If you do not have a passport or your current passport is damaged or does not have the required validity, you must obtain a new one before arriving in Greece.

Because Greece is part of the Schengen agreement, after entering the country, U.S. citizens can travel freely among all Schengen countries for up to 90 days without having to show their travel documents again. However, country officials have the right to conduct passport checks, so you should travel with your passport.

According to the Greece foreign entry requirements, U.S. citizens are allowed to stay in Greece for up to 90 days without a visa if they are visiting for tourism or business.

If you are staying for longer than 90 days or for a different reason, you may need to secure a visa before you arrive. EXCEPTION: U.S. citizens traveling on an official or diplomatic passport must obtain a visa before they arrive in Greece.
