All visitors are required to register with the local police within 24 hours of arrival. If you are staying at a hotel, you will automatically be registered.

According to the Croatia foreign entry requirements, all U.S. citizens must have a valid passport to enter the country. If you do not have a passport or your current passport is damaged or will expire before your trip, you must obtain a new one before you arrive in Croatia.

When to Apply

Processing time for U.S. passport applications ranges from two to six weeks. Routine service usually takes four to six weeks, while expedited service takes approximately two to three weeks. However, these ranges are only estimates.

It can take longer for applications to be processed during peak application times throughout the year. Therefore, it is recommended that you apply for your passport as far in advance of your trip as possible to ensure you receive your travel document prior to your scheduled departure.

U.S. citizens traveling to Croatia for tourism or business for less than 90 days within a six-month period do not require a visa according to the Croatia foreign entry requirements.

Residency Permit

U.S. citizens planning to stay in Croatia for more than 90 days must apply for a temporary residence permit. According to the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs website, if you live in the United States, you must obtain your first permit from the Croatian Embassy or Consulate in the U.S.

If you are already in Croatia, and you need to extend your stay beyond 90 days, you can submit your application to the local police.

The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs website states that applicants must submit the following documents with an Apostille stamp at the time of application: copy of passport, two photos, birth, marriage and/or divorce certificate and a criminal history report.

In addition, you will be required to provide proof of health insurance, housing, sufficient funds for your stay and the appropriate fee.
