Bhutan Foreign Entry Requirements

If you will be traveling to Bhutan for any reason, it is important that you learn about the Bhutan foreign entry requirements before your trip. All travel must be booked through a licensed tour operator or foreign travel agent.

Visitors are not permitted to travel through Bhutan on their own. All U.S. citizens visiting Bhutan are required to have a valid passport and visa for entry into the country and will be required to pay a daily tariff established by the Bhutan government.

In addition, visitors may be required to meet certain health requirements. Additional information about the entry requirements is outlined below. However, they are subject to change. For the most up to date information, contact the Bhutan Embassy or visit the website of the Tourism Council of Bhutan prior to your trip.

Tour operators are responsible for securing visas. You cannot submit your application for processing on your own. Visa clearance must be obtained through Thimphu before you will be allowed to purchase plane tickets for travel to Bhutan. It will take at least 10 days to receive visa clearance.

When you arrive in Bhutan, your visa, which is one of the Bhutan foreign entry requirements, will be stamped in your passport. You must pay a $20.00 visa fee and present two passport photos upon arrival. According to the website of the Tourism Council of Bhutan, visas are issued for a period of 15 days.

Depending on the length of your stay, there may be health restrictions for your visit to Bhutan.
