All U.S. citizens need a valid U.S. passport when traveling to Austria. Your passport must be valid for at least three months after your scheduled departure date from Austria. If you don’t have a passport or your current passport will expire earlier than that, you must get a new one before traveling.
Because Austria is part of the Schengen agreement, after entering Austria, U.S. citizens can travel freely among all Schengen countries for up to 90 days without having to show their travel documents again.

Submitting Your Application
You must submit your visa application in person at an Austria Embassy or Consulate. You cannot apply by mail. It is important that you provide all of the required documentation. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
If you want your documents returned to you by mail, you must include a pre-paid, self-addressed return envelope when you submit your application. According to the website of the Austrian Embassy, applications take about 15 days to process and cannot be submitted more than three months before your trip.
The Austrian Embassy recommends submitting your application at least a month before you are scheduled to leave.
